Sharing day for our class will be Thursday, March 21st in our regular music class. Students can bring in piano books, or other instruments that they play to share with their class.
In Language Arts we are busy with poetry, book clubs and letter writing. Yesterday in poetry we read The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Lord Tennyson. The children eagerly drew connections to Rapunzel and may even have been a bit saddened that it was not the same story. We listened to the song by Loreena McKennitt and watched the video. Some students were surprised that music lyrics are poetry. Baby shark do do do do..... In Math we have just finished learning partial quotient long division and we are moving along to the traditional long division algorithm. Knowing those basic multiplication facts really, REALLY helps with this unit. Students have a multiplication grid on their desks to help but those that have them memorized find this unit much easier. We continue to work on them at school and it is an excellent thing to work on for homework. In Science we are researching the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and creating a project together. Students can bring in clean bits of plastic like lids, straws, plastic utensils, bags etc. Bonus if they are clear, green or blue. Reminders:
It was a really busy week with skating. It was a great success and added excitement and lots of fresh air to our week! I was thoroughly impressed with how much growth the new skaters made in four days. Our already pro skaters played ice soccer and on Friday brought their hockey and ringette sticks. Even though some of the days were chilly, students were so excited and happy on the ice that they did not seem bothered! We were also very busy with the Entrepreneurial Adventure Program. Students researched charities and in small groups, they made posters to represent the one they felt the most connected to. We held a class vote and decided the charity we liked best was Calgary Homeless Foundation. We met as a grade 4 group next and each of the classes presented their class' choice. Mr. Long's class had chosen CHF also and in the end, it was the charity that was chosen by the majority of students. This morning students met with two people from the EA program and a BMO bank manager to kickstart the second part of our program. Students have been asked to consider a product to sell or event to hold that can raise money. We had a discussion about how the product or event needs to appeal to our customers (the students in our school and their families) and how important the profit margin is. Each class will be in charge of their business but it would be nice if the products from the four classes connect in some way. Your child might want to have a conversation with the family to brainstorm some ideas. We finished our Drink Can Dragster project on Monday. We used the gym to test the vehicles to see if they moved in a straight line, how far they could go and how fast they could go. Here is a video of one of the races: The Grade One class presented a Kindness Ninja Assembly today that was so well done. It was full of happiness and fun. Afterwards and before French we had time for an App share. Today's App is called Triple Town. It is a beautiful game that promotes visual planning, problem solving and strategy. There are many choices of ways to play including a timed game, games with added challenges, a peaceful game and various changing events. The app pictures look like this: Have a wonderful weekend!
Skating on Monday Remember to bring your skates and helmets if you have them. There will be plenty here to borrow. Please bring all your winter gear including extra socks and mitts.
