Here are some links to provide practice at home for the numeration concepts covered so far in our math unit. At this time, students are provided with websites to use that are rich with the information they are seeking for their research. In the interest in developing critical website evaluation skills, we learned about the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus. It is such a detailed and engaging hoax that had the students suspending their disbelief because of the beautiful graphics and interesting content. Students learned the basics of determining the validity of a website, the first being common sense! We will be building them on December 12 Dear Parents, We are fortunate to have Resource Person Jason Plain Eagle, our Cultural resident, working with our classes, beginning on November 15th to teach the children about Blackfoot games through the lens of Indigenous traditions. The cost of this program will be $12.00 per student. Please pay online using your My CBE/Powerschool account which can be found on the Olympic Heights website by November 19th, 2018. Students loved rigging up pulleys to test their mechanical advantage. She is incorporating lots of hands on activities to make their learning meaningful and the students are enjoying science each day. Our math energizer today was "I have, who has?" Ask your child how this game is played. We moved on to using base ten to regroup. Students were given amounts like '70 tens' or 'six hundreds, 25 tens and 36 ones' and needed to figure out what number it represented. Some students could do it in their heads, others used paper and pencil to draw the base ten block representation and some used the plastic base 10 blocks to build the numbers and physically trade the blocks. We will continue these skills for the next couple of days. Dear Parents/Guardians At Olympic Heights, we believe in providing our students with the tools to learn and lead in the modern world. We are all surrounded by technology whether be our phones or cars. These modern day gadgets have become an in-separable part of our lives. We want our students to transition from being consumers of technology to creators of technology. We are, thus, organizing a one week coding bootcamp for the students. We have partnered with Launchpad Learning Inc., who will be conducting the bootcamp for us. Launchpad Learning is one of the first organizations in Calgary to provide basic and advanced level programming classes for kids (ages 6+). They have been teaching in Calgary for more than a year. They will be working with all students in Grades Three and Four for about 1.5 Hours/Day with each classroom for each week. Grade 3 – November 26-29 Grade 4 – December 3-6 There is a cost of $10.00/student for this activity. Please pay on-line with your My CBE/PowerSchool account by Thursday, November 22. The bootcamp is specially designed for Olympic Heights School and it is a great introduction to computer programming in an interactive way. The students will start with Scratch programming, a platform that makes computer programming easier by visuals and graphics. Then they will be introduced to practical text based programming using Python. As part of your grade 4 child’s upcoming experiential learning experience taking part on November 15 and 22, they will be invited to participate in a traditional smudge. Smudge is an important and meaningful practice in Indigenous culture that promotes calm, positive energy; clear thoughtful learning; and the development of caring relationships. An honored tradition amongst many Indigenous peoples, smudge involves burning a small piece of Sweetgrass that is harvested in the summer. Your child’s class will be invited to be part of a smudge in the class prior to our guest, Jason PlainEagle speaking. They will not be directly involved in smudging themselves, but bare witness to Jason smudging so that he may begin his presentation to the students in a culturally appropriate way. According to Niigan Sinclair (University of Manitoba), “The most important message of smudging is that it recognizes the power and the life of the earth, and that we’re related to that.” Smudging in Public Schools: reconciliation or religious act? Social Studies Homework Tonight: Please have your child fill in pros and cons to having the Olympic Games in Calgary. They can have discussions with adults around them, research appropriate websites (with parent support), watch the news, etc. We will continue to brainstorm pros and cons at school and follow the vote results. Cold/Flu season has begun and many children have been feeling sick. We had a deep cleaning of our classroom over the weekend and we continue to encourage the kids to wash their hands often. At this time, Room 14 would happily accept a box of tissues from any child willing to donate. We prefer to use our classroom dollars on school supplies and we have used up most of our Kleenex. Students finished up their poppy art today. Here are some photos: With Ms. Talion, students built paper cars today to determine where the best placement for an axle on a wheel is. They had so much fun building and testing their designs. Here was our math warm up today. Have your child show you how they determined the answer. Don't miss the "monkey wrench" in the last line. In gym we are playing Poison Ball. It is a dodgeball type of game with some very special big balls. There are a few rules to remember and it is a very fast paced game. Students are loving it! Students experimented creating and using a roller system today in science. Ms. Talion challenged them to use resources in the classroom like markers, pencil crayons, water bottles and anything else they could find that rolled, to move a load of books. By exploring all sorts of materials and ideas, students were able to test and retest to explore and understand the concept of how and why rollers create a mechanical advantage. We are starting to work on basic facts in math. Students wrote a baseline multiplication quiz today so they can track their progress. Each child is challenged to beat their personal bests by increasing their score at a slow and steady rate. We will be practicing in all different ways including timed tests. Quizzing your child at home, in the car, and in the bathtub is an excellent way of helping them memorize these valuable facts. There are several fun and engaging games online and logging into Prodigy will also provide practice. Students in Grade 4 should have instant recall of facts to 7X7 and work with questions up to 9X9. We will also be practicing addition and subtraction facts to 18 as a review. Reminders:
Today we talked about what peace means to us. Each child is making a page for big picture book to share with our Grade 2 buddies.
